Real people, in people in military uniform (23 photos). Man in military uniform Guys in army uniform

More than 37,000 men aged 19 to 26 woke up on May 11 and found their names on the lists of those liable for military service in the Lithuanian army. The first wave needed 3,000 recruits, 2/3 of which were volunteers.

Some young people began to share their opinions on social networks and show their unwillingness to serve in the army, which caused an indignant reaction from the “public”. They were called "coward", "weakling", etc. This negativity attracted the attention of Beata and Neringa, and they reacted creatively to it.

The women randomly collected 14 men aged 17 to 28 and made portraits of them. The guys were depicted in tears and military uniform. Beata and Neringa decided that this good way show how dangerous gender expectations are: after all, it is commonly believed that men are rational, insensitive and aggressive.

Photos are accompanied by quotes from participants in photography. The guys expressed their opinion about what it means to be courageous and how it relates to military service.

Jaunius, 18: A weapon in hand is not a sign of courage.

Vytautas, 27: The army will not make a man out of you - if you are stupid, then you will remain so.

Dominikas, 26: I choose what kind of person I want to be.

Rokas, 17: Courage is to act to achieve your goals and ideas, to defend your values. I think everyone can go to war, but the army is not for everyone.

Vitenis, 18: I could join the army. Sometimes I lack courage and resilience. An army is good if you can handle it. I was inspired by my friend, a girl who became a volunteer soldier.

Edvinas, 17: Is it possible to impose a choice on a person and call it freedom?

Danas, 28: In my opinion, the archaic times when a man had to kill a buffalo and drag him home are long gone. I think that the army is generally not bad, but not compulsory service. Especially when the government announced it so suddenly, without public discussion. You need to know about the introduction of the system at school. You need to grow up with the idea of serving in the army.

Denisas, 23: There is no place for violence in today's free society. Mandatory must be those things that you choose of your own free will.

Martinas, 22: Masculinity is about making your own choices.

Egor, 25: You only lose when you stop fighting.

Eustace, 18: Real strength is the ability to develop one's own mind. Let's be strong.

Mindaugas, 25: When I was in school, compulsory military service was abolished. Then I was very happy. But looking back, I realize that I would have served better then, and not now, when I have my own agency and when I created jobs for other people. I need to take care of all this.

Most likely, you think that the military is either a hero or a killer, but few of us have actually taken the time to see who is really behind these imposing men in uniform. However, photographer Devin Mitchell has created a touching photo project called the Veterans Art Project, which allows you to explore what is on the other side of the uniform. Using Photoshop, Mitchell created images of military men and women in uniform whose mirror images show who they are and vice versa.

"The military community has expressed interest in being able to communicate through my art, as many in the military feel like they're living a double life in the military," says Mitchell. “People who have never served have shown interest in the project as an opportunity to gain additional information about the various aspects that lead veterans to experience this.”

“The photo that really tells a lot is the photo of Joshua Zitting and his significant other Patrick Lehman,” says Mitchell, who is gay himself. “It reminds me of the injustice that one can serve and enjoy all the constitutional rights that an American has, while other men and women in other parts of the country like him cannot enjoy them, in part because decisions such as the latest decision by District Judge Geoffrey Sutton. Such judges pale in my eyes. Maybe photos like this will help this judge get a better look at people.”
