What should I pay attention to when driving roundabouts according to the new traffic rules? Who will be right and who is to blame in an accident on the circle? And why the circle is different.

We are sure that many motorists have heard and know that from November 8, new rules for driving roundabouts came into effect. The passage of the circle is fixed by a decree of the Government of the Russian Federation and states that drivers approaching the roundabout are required to give way to cars that are already moving at the roundabout.

On paper, everything looks good. What motorists have been waiting for a long time has finally happened. However, reality itself cannot be immediately changed with one stroke of the pen, and most importantly, it is impossible to change the habit of motorists who have been passing such specific intersections for years using a completely different algorithm.

Observing the Brownian motion at such intersections, we came to the conclusion that, in our opinion, it only intensified to a certain extent. This is a normal reaction for the transition period, which by the way can last a year or more. It is necessary to know certain nuances in order not to get into an unpleasant situation, which can lead to an incorrect interpretation of this innovation in the rules of the road.

First, you first need to decide on the types of roundabouts. In total, there are two types of them: these are equivalent and unequal intersections. What is their fundamental difference? Let's consider everything in more detail.

Equivalent roundabout

If you drive up to the circle you see such a sign ( Sign 4.3),

then this means that you are entering an equivalent intersection. Changes in the rules from November 8 just govern the passage of these intersections. Therefore, if approaching the intersection you see only sign 4.3, then the algorithm of your actions in this case will be as follows:

YOU GIVE ROAD TO CARS THAT ARE MOVING IN A CIRCLE.

As soon as you are on the circle itself, then you are required to let all cars entering the intersection already pass.

The main thing is that you must remember this and memorize it from now on.

Uneven roundabout

This type of intersections, like the previous one, has not gone away and it is unlikely that it will ever be completely abolished. Local traffic police authorities, at their discretion, in addition to sign 4.3 indicating a circle, sometimes set priority signs:

Sign 2.1 "Main Road"

Sign 2.4 "Give way"

This is dictated by the organization of traffic on the ground.

It is precisely in these intersections that the greatest danger for motorists lurks. One gets the feeling that some drivers, having inattentively familiarized themselves with the updated traffic rules, decided for themselves that the above signs are no longer valid, they say they have not had time to remove them yet, they begin to drive in a circle ahead and thus create emergency situations. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT THIS! SIGNS WORK! New roundabout rules here not spread. Everything remains the same. Let's remind everyone again.

The following paragraphs of the rules govern the passage of such intersections:

13.9. At the intersection of unequal roads, the driver of a vehicle moving along a secondary road must give way to vehicles approaching along the main road, regardless of the direction of their further movement.

13.10. In the case when the main road changes direction at an intersection, drivers moving along the main road must be guided by the rules for passing the intersections of equivalent roads. The same rules should be followed by drivers moving on secondary roads.

Thus, it must be remembered that when approaching the intersection from the side of the “Give way” sign, it is necessary to give way to cars located on the main road accordingly. If the circle or part of the circle is a main road and it intersects with another main road that is adjacent to the circle, then the driver must follow the rule of interference from the right, i.e. give way to the vehicle with the right of way.

This is the second important rule which you need to know.

What should you do to avoid getting into an accident at the intersection?


Pay close attention to posted signs and be vigilant. Even having the right of way in the passage and seeing that the other participant in the movement is not going to give way to you, it is better to let him through, perhaps he has not yet heard about the innovation or just got confused on the road.

Penalty for breaking a circle

Penalty for not giving advantage in a roundabout in accordance with Article 12.13,- failure to comply with the requirement of the Rules of the Road to give way to a vehicle that enjoys the right of way at intersections, is 1.000 rubles.

Please do not forget about some other opportunities to get fined. They are of course less common, but cause no less damage to the wallet:

If the driver intends to turn left, he must occupy the left lane. These actions also apply to motorists who wish to turn the car around and drive in the opposite direction.

Turning at the roundabout

Legislative provisions stipulate that the circle, in the case of a right turn at a roundabout, is the main road, and other roads are secondary. After the intersection is overcome, the motorist must not lose his lane, otherwise this will cause traffic violations, including car accidents.

When making a left turn at a roundabout, motorists are required to slow down, turn on the turn signal, and change lanes to the far right. Before entering the roundabout, the driver must make sure that other vehicles let the new car pass. This approach will ensure a smooth passage, as a new car at the intersection will not interfere with drivers who intend to enter the left circle.

If there are several lanes on the road (the road is, for example, three-lane), then the driver must take the left lane. You need to overcome a three-lane roundabout in the same way. The driver should only change lanes to the right twice.

Going straight

It should be noted that there may be many adjoining roads with an intersection, which is important in determining the further actions of the motorist in the event of a maneuver. If we are talking about several bands, then you need to choose the middle band from them. Moving on the main road, a motorist, before entering the intersection, must make sure that other cars let the vehicle pass.

If the car is moving on a secondary road, then it must let other vehicles pass ahead. Driving through a roundabout, if the driver intends to move straight, is also carried out along the right lane. In 2020, there are new rules for passing roundabouts, which in practice are not observed by many motorists, since the latter are not aware of the change directions intersections with roundabout. Pros and cons

Loop movement has a number of advantages and disadvantages, and its positive aspects are the following advantages:

  • cars moving in a circle have the right of way;

  • overtaking and stopping are allowed;
  • high throughput.

Driving around the ring according to the traffic rules is not specifically described now - there are general rules for driving and norms regarding markings and installed signs, which need to be considered in more detail.

According to the current traffic rules, traffic along the ring is carried out in the same way as at ordinary unregulated intersections. As a result, roundabout rules give priority to those entering the intersection over those already moving through the intersection. However, not so long ago, changes were made to the SDA. The following additional signs can now be installed at roundabouts:

  • 2.4 - the requirement to give way;
  • 2.5 - prohibition to move without stopping.

The combination of these signs will mean that those cars already at the intersection will have priority over those who are trying to enter there.

However, you need to remember: this situation is allowed only where there are signs 2.4 or 2.5! Otherwise, the traffic rules have not changed - and the driver does not always enjoy the advantage. Correct trajectory and direction of entry

Let's figure out how the driver should enter the ring. This question is not so simple, since usually there are several lanes on the ring, and multi-lane paths also adjoin it. In addition, in some cases, the number of lanes for traffic at the intersection itself and at the exits from it may differ. What rules apply here?

How to get to the transport ring from the right lane?

You can enter the ring from any lane, but it is easiest to drive through roundabouts on the right. In this case, the driver must act as follows:

  • drive up to the intersection, slow down;
  • go to the right lane of the ring;
  • if necessary, move to the left or middle lane if you do not plan to turn right at the next exit.

How to start moving around the ring from the left lane?

The traffic rules require the driver to move into the left lane at the turn. However, if the car moves in a circular direction at a turn, this requirement does not apply to it: you can not change lanes, but drive straight into the ring.

But at the same time, the roundabout rules indicate that you can only enter the intersection in an equivalent row of the ring. If a driver traveling in the left lane enters the right lane of the ring, he thereby crosses the trajectory of those who are already moving in the right lane of the adjoining road.

Which turn signals to turn on?

Passage of the ring according to the traffic rules requires the driver to use turn signals. Usually motorists forget about them - but in vain: in this regard, the circle does not differ from the usual turn at the intersection.

Therefore, in order not to violate traffic rules, you need to turn on the turn signals as follows:

  • leaving the circle - the right one works;
  • changing lanes - left or right, depending on the direction of the maneuver;

In a word, the old rule “where you turn the steering wheel, you turn on the turn signal” also applies to those moving around the ring.

Preparation for departure and rules of care

A driver wishing to leave a roundabout must take action in advance. First of all, he must change lanes to the right. Passing a roundabout according to the new rules does not change anything here: even if the ring has priority over those entering, you cannot leave the left lane to the right. At the same time, it is necessary to let pass both those who are moving in the extreme right lane, and those who are going to go into the lane in which the car is already moving.

Approaching the exit, the driver must use the right turn signal to show other road users that he is going to maneuver now. Violation of this rule is fraught with a collision. It must be remembered that if there are no special signs or markings, you need to let those who enter the ring pass.

Which car has the advantage of traffic rules?

Since priority has already been mentioned, it is worth bringing together all the conditions that a roundabout has according to traffic rules. So here are the priority rules in a nutshell:

  • If there is only sign 4.3, then the advantage is on the side of those who enter the ring.
  • Stop signs (“Stop”) or the requirement to skip - priority for those who are already on the ring.
  • If part of the circle or all of it is the main road according to the signs, then here you also need to let those who are already driving under it pass.
  • If a traffic light is installed on the ring, you need to focus on its signals.

Penalties for traffic violations

Typical disorders in circular driving are the following:

  1. Departure to the intersection through the stop line. This violation is punishable by a fine of 800 rubles.
  2. Driving on a red light, if there is a traffic light in front of the circle - a fine of 1000 rubles for the first time. The second time you will have to pay 5,000 already, or lose your rights for up to six months.
  3. Violation of the norms on priority - a fine of 1000 rubles.
  4. A turn signal not included will cost 500 rubles.
  5. A turn in violation of the rules of rowing will cost the same amount.

  7. Movement towards the flow - deprivation of rights.

At one time, amendments to the rules for driving roundabouts brought confusion to the heads of drivers. Among motorists, the opinion has spread that the circle is always the main one. This has led to many accidents. Proper circular motion involves taking into account signs.

Turn signals at the entrance to the circle and movement on it

Very often when approaching a roundabout, you can see amazing picture: the vast majority of cars are standing with the right turn signal on and only a few with the left. Which driver is right and who is wrong?

If you really learned traffic rules, then you should know that the drivers who turned on the right turn signal when entering the ring are right. The fact is that the circle is still the same intersection. Accordingly, all turn signals on it should be exactly the same. If the driver turns left, then he turns on the left turn signal, right - right.

The same rule applies to rebuilding. When entering the roundabout, the driver always moves to the right. So he must turn on the right turn signal. It's not hard to remember this. Turn on the turn signal to which you turn the steering wheel.

When driving around the ring, if the driver does not change lanes, it is recommended to turn off the turn signal and turn it on when making any maneuver.

As we have already found out, you can drive through the ring in any lane. But here it should be remembered that the constant use of the right lane without congresses is quite dangerous. The fact is that out of ignorance or non-compliance with traffic rules, every second motorist seeks to jump into the exit he needs from the inside, or even worse from the left lane.

At the same time, these drivers firmly believe that if another motorist is in the right lane along the ring, then he must definitely leave the circle. Accidents in such situations happen very often. Therefore, you should not abuse the traffic in the right lane if you do not need to use the nearest exit.

The same paragraph 8.5 of the SDA will help us answer this question. Recall that the rules prescribe the driver when turning right, left or turning around in advance to occupy extreme position on the road corresponding to the direction of rotation. It turns out that exit from the ring is possible only from the right lane.

However, exceptions are possible due to markings and signs. That is, on the pavement in front of the exit from the ring we see arrows indicating the possibility of moving to the right from two lanes at once, and there are signs above the road indicating traffic in lanes. If there are no special signs and markings, then you can only move off the ring into the right lane.

Is this rule followed in real life? Of course not. Every second driver ignores these rules. Motorists can leave the circle in any lane and from any lane.

It is very common to see drivers directing their cars to the right exit from the inner lane of the roundabout. Such violators do not even think about the fact that they are violating traffic rules and in the event of an accident, traffic police officers find them guilty, with all the ensuing consequences.

Let's consider a situation where a driver is moving along the inner lane of a circle and he needs to move into one of the nearest exits from the ring. How to do it right? Taking into account the rules of rebuilding.

When driving around the ring, you need to give signals with turn signals in a timely manner and do not forget about the interference on the right. That is, the driver must first move to the right lane to then be able to move off the circle without violating the rules. Driving straight around the ring

Often in large cities in front of large roundabouts you can see a combination of signs 4.3 and 2.1.

The latter has an explanatory sign indicating the direction. Most often, the main road on such a ring means driving straight around the ring.

Features of the passage of such an intersection:

  • In the event that a motorist intends to drive straight, he can do this without stopping, using his pre-emptive right. Of course, you need to make sure that other drivers pass it.
  • In the event that he enters the ring road on the main road, but intends to use another exit in the future, then the driver, when leaving the main road, will have to give way to cars entering the circle from the right.

Since the passage of such intersections has always caused difficulties for drivers, today traffic lights are increasingly used instead of signs. This greatly simplifies the rules of the road. Unfortunately, only new intersections with roundabouts and the main road are equipped with traffic lights.

Responsibility for traffic violations on the ring

Drivers who violate the rules on the circle can be fined if the violation is recorded by the traffic police. The amount of the fine depends on the severity of the violation. So, when leaving the ring with ignoring the prohibitory signal of a traffic light, the driver will be fined for 1,000 rubles.

In case of a repeated violation, the driver will be fined in the amount of 5,000 rubles or may revoke a driver's license for up to six months. The choice of one or another type of punishment is taken by the court.

When driving through a roundabout, the driver may be fined for the following violations:

  1. If he did not provide an advantage when entering the ring.
  2. The driver was moving in the opposite direction to the general flow.
  3. He did not use turn signals when changing lanes at the ring.
  4. The driver left the roundabout from the wrong lane.
  5. He parked at the crossroads.

Failure to provide an advantage is punishable by a fine in 1,000 rubles regardless of whether the relevant road signs.

In our country, the ring traffic is carried out counterclockwise. You can't go around the circle in a clockwise direction. Such a breach punishable by disqualification.

The new rules allow parking on the ring only if the car is within 5 meters from the intersection of the carriageways. If this condition is not met, the driver will be fined. for 500 rubles.

When entering a roundabout under sign 2.4, only those drivers who are already moving in the right lane of the circle should be allowed to pass. You do not need to wait at all for the inner lanes of the circle to be free. You can immediately continue driving in the right lane.

In such a situation, you need to be extremely careful, since there is a high probability that other drivers who do not comply with traffic rules will drive out of the inner circle in front of you.
