A hat-helmet is a product that combines the advantages of a hat with earflaps and a scarf (or cape). That is, it is a warm thing that reliably protects the child from the cold and wind blowing into the ears, the back of the head and around the neck. This is probably why mothers are increasingly choosing this particular hat for their babies: there is no need to worry that the child lost a scarf on a walk, tied it up incorrectly, or does not know how to do it at all. In a hat-helmet, knitted from warm yarn, he is wrapped up and warm in any case. Especially if you additionally put it on a soft fleece lining. A hat-helmet is a universal wardrobe item: it suits both boys and girls.








There are many workshops with different ways of knitting. Therefore, mothers who decide to knit such a hat for their baby with their own hands sometimes review more than one master class until they find a hat-helmet that suits them. We offer you some simple options for how to knit a hat-helmet with knitting needles. After all, you should always start with what is simpler. And then, having understood the basic principles of knitting, you can select other patterns, finishes, vary the size of the cap.


We’ll make a reservation right away that we won’t give exact calculations for a hat-helmet, since all children, even of the same age, differ in height, build and head circumference, and each mother has her own knitting density. At the same time, the master class basically gives specific numbers: the number of loops, decreases, etc. Here it is easier to knit a hat, and then adjust the calculations of its scheme to the size of your child (taking into account the thickness of the yarn, knitting needles, knitting density).

Master class No. 1 Hat with a jacquard pattern

So, this master class will show you how to knit a hat for a boy. The most common knitting option for such a hat for a boy is to use the principle of knitting heels on socks to knit the hat itself.
The cap has an approximate size: head circumference 45-48 cm (for babies up to two years old). First we knit the turn-down parts for the front and back. For each part, we collect 50 loops, before we knit to a height of about 30 rows. with a 2x2 rubber band and set aside. For the back, this height is 40 p. Now we combine both parts and close them in a circle. It is necessary to tie about 30 p. necks, as dictated by the same scheme - with an elastic band. We make out the oval of the face. From the side of the front (where the turn-down part is shorter) we close the middle 18 p. Then we decrease in each odd p. 5 times 2 loops each (now knitting does not go in a circle, but back and forth). The hat is knitted to a certain height (about 15-16 cm).
Next, you need to tie the very “heel”: divide the loops into three parts and knit only the middle one, decreasing one st from the sides on both sides, until only the middle loops remain on the knitting needles. Further, moving along the course of knitting (and we are now approximately on the forehead, and we will move along the cheeks), we select new loops from the hem loops. They must be knitted with the same elastic band, about 4-5 cm. That, in fact, is the whole master class. If you do not add additional decor, in such a hat-helmet the boy will somehow resemble a knight (because of the chest part).

Master class number 2: Knight's hat-helmet

If you slightly modernize the first master class, you get a hat in which the boy will look even more like a brave knight.
So, we start the hat-helmet, as described above, but after combining the canvases into one, you need to tie them in height so that the neckline comes over the face in the beard area (approximately 12 cm). We close the middle 40 loops in front (possibly more, all sizes are individual) from this place we begin to make an opening for the face. It is necessary to knit about 12 more centimeters in height (again, not in a circle), after which they pick up on the knitting needles the number of stitches equal to the previously closed ones: 40.
Having knitted about 8 cm in height, we reduce the number of loops on the knitting needles in half, knitting them 2 together. Now, depending on the number of loops initially dialed, we divide them into equal sections (8-10). In each such segment in odd r. knit 2 persons together. The remaining 8-10 loops are pulled together. We tie the resulting cutout for the face with crochet half-columns - such conciseness is suitable for a boy. The hat is ready.

Master class number 4: a hat-helmet for a girl

As the name implies, such a hat can be knitted according to more “gentle” pattern patterns.

The master class will demonstrate that a hat for a girl will have a more feminine and varied finish.

So, we will knit a model for a head circumference of 50-52 cm. The cap starts with work from the neck. With knitting needles No. 3 we collect 110 p., close and knit 2 p. accessory yarn. After that, we pass to the main yarn and to knitting as the diagram shows: with an elastic band 5-6 cm. We evenly add 20 loops (it will turn out 130 p. in the work). We turn to knitting with knitting needles No. 3.5 and knit 5 p. persons. p. We close the middle 33 loops to form the oval of the face, then in the odd (front) rows 4 times, 1 p. = 89 pet.

Next, you need to knit 60-80 rows with the selected pattern (depending on the size of the head and the rapport of the pattern). Now, to round the oval, you need to add 4 times in odd p. on both sides, 1 p. We collect on the knitting needles for the frontal area 33 p. We continue to knit in a circle with the selected pattern for another 40-60 p.
Now we begin to form the crown. The principle is similar to a hat for a boy: we divide the work into 10-13 equal parts and in each we decrease 1 loop in each person. row (obtained per row minus 10-13 pet.). Thus, we knit another 6 cm. We tighten the remaining loops.
Now we knit the cape of the hat-helmet. To do this, we dissolve the auxiliary thread, select the loops on the knitting needles and knit the shoulder area with the selected pattern. For example, making increases like raglan. We knit a shirt-front to a height of 8-9 cm. We make a hole for the oval of the face. We select the loops along the edge. They must be tied with an elastic band to a height of 4-5 cm. The hat is ready. It remains to choose the finish (if desired).
