For Russian folk costumes, we needed bast shoes. Where to get? It is impossible to buy, weave - there is nothing. I decided to try knitting from a hemp rope. I rummaged through the Internet and found an idea how to crochet. Again - there is no hook, and they are not very similar in shape to real bast shoes.

Hunting is worse than captivity: I also didn’t have thick knitting needles, so wooden sticks for barbecue went into action. As a result, she tied four pairs of different sizes: for a child of 3 years, for a seven-year-old girl, for herself (p. 36-37) and for her husband (p. 42-43).

I didn’t get bast shoes, but onuchi, for our purposes they are also suitable.

For knitting all sizes of bast shoes, I used a hemp rope with a diameter of 3-3.5 mm.

Bast shoes for seven years

We collect 12 loops on the knitting needles and knit with a garter stitch for 54 rows. It turns out a rectangle measuring 12cm by 28cm.

Then we sew the heel on one side.

From the other side we bend 6 cm. and sew on the sides.

We insert the same hemp rope into the backdrop for ties and get a bast shoe.

Bast shoes for a three-year-old

We collect 11 loops on the knitting needles and knit with a garter stitch for 44 rows. It turns out a rectangle measuring 10 cm by 23 cm. Then we sew the heel on one side, and bend it 5 cm on the other. and sew on the sides. We insert the same hemp rope into the backdrop for ties and get a bast shoe.

Size 36-37

We collect 14 loops on the knitting needles and knit with a garter stitch for 60 rows. It turns out a rectangle measuring 14cm by 32cm. Then we sew the heel on one side, and on the other we bend it by 9 cm. and sew on the sides. We insert the same hemp rope into the backdrop for ties and get a bast shoe. To maintain the squareness of the sock during the performance, I stuffed a little padding polyester into the corners of the sock.

Peasants in Rus' went barefoot in the warm season. Although many had bast shoes, home-made shoes made of birch bark, they were taken care of. And when the bast shoes wore out, became unsuitable for further wear, they were by no means thrown away. The easiest way is to tie hemp rope bast shoes with a hook. You can also find step-by-step instructions on how to weave them from birch bark or willow vines. We take cardboard, draw on it the shape of our future bast shoes, crumple the newspaper and give it an oval shape. And wrap it with cling film along with cardboard.

Here is the preparation we have made.

From cardboard, I cut out two parts to weave the bottom in shape.

We take the base, put it under a folder or file and start wrapping it around the edge with twine twice ...

Then we make such strips from 6 pieces of twine, 2 from ordinary twine, then 2 from bleached twine and again 2 from ordinary, i.e. bleached twine is obtained in the middle ...

I did this: first I measured the length of the strip, cut 6 pieces, laid it out correctly, smeared the line with glue, and immediately began to glue it in a bunch. I fixed the beginning, and then first glued the middle, and then the side segments. And you don’t have to lay out one segment at a time, it turns out much faster! I didn’t count exactly how many, but somewhere around 10 stripes per insole ...

And now we begin to weave))) how useful it was for me that I learned to weave from paper tubes)))) the process is the same)))

After a time, we lift the strip and lay another one ... I hope it’s clear from the photo!
