Glue the ears in place. That's it, the donkey can be filled and decorated with colored paper. Just remember that later the child (or adult) will need to break the piñata, so don’t be too zealous about strengthening it and making it strong.

Then we wrap the bottom of each donkey's leg with tissue paper.

After the first layer, let the paper dry completely, then apply the next one. In total, you will need three layers of strips for the base. To ensure the workpiece is completely dry, leave it hanging overnight.

• While the ball is drying, prepare the decor. Draw a cone on a piece of cardboard as shown in the photo. Cut it along the outer contour. Make a cut on one side with a utility knife. This will allow you to evenly connect the edges of the workpiece.

• Form a cone from the cardboard blank. In this case, thread the edge of the figure into the hole on the opposite side of the template. Secure the edges of the cardboard with tape to prevent them from coming apart while using the piñata. In total you will need 7 of these figures.

• Make a small hole near the tail of the ball and pierce it so that the air completely escapes. Attach the cone to this place and circle it around the outer edge.

• Using a knife, cut out a circle, but not all the way. Leave one side attached to the base. Open the lid and take out the ball. Also shake out any remaining dried flour.

• Cut the circle from the center to the hole. Cut the twine, pass it through the hole and tie a double knot at one end. You can use a rope to hang the figure for fun.

• Fill the shape with sweets and confetti, close the lid and seal with masking tape.

• Bend the base of the cone inward, apply glue and secure it to the ball.

Let's start making our piñata.

1. We are preparing a place to work. You need to lay a large piece of film or newspaper on the floor. Next, tear the newspapers into square or rectangular pieces of medium size.

2. I dilute PVA glue with a small amount of warm water. This way it dries faster and sets better.

3. We inflate the balloon, but not all the way. As the newspapers dry on the ball, they will compress the ball and it may burst before the process is complete. We do not tie it with a thread, but rather with a ribbon, so that later during the drying process we can inflate this ball or vice versa. Sometimes, when the surrounding air is not warm, but cold, the balloon will deflate, and the wet newspapers will settle and the shape will be lost.

4. Apply with a wide brush. I do it with my hands. Glue a piece of newspaper to the ball. This needs to be done all over the ball, gluing pieces of newspaper overlapping. We leave the upper part of the future piñata uncovered, where the tail of the ball is approximately 15-20 cm. First, glue the newspapers in two, maximum three layers. Smooth it out with your hands and let it dry. In the summer, the piñata dries in a matter of hours on the street or balcony. In winter, the drying process slows down. But if you dry it near the radiator, it will dry much faster. In total we glue 4-6 layers. Usually, I ask in advance what age the children will be hitting the piñata. For kids, three layers will be enough, but for older children you need more layers. I once made a piñata for adults with 12 layers.

5. After the base has dried. It will take about three days. You can check by the characteristic dry sound if you knock on it. Or you can let some air out of the piñata and check. Untie the ribbon. This is another secret of using ribbon when tying a ball. Instead of bursting it, you can blow it away and use it again. The inside of the papier-mâché base should be dry and smooth. Then we take a knife or scissors, and around the perimeter of the ball, stepping back from the hole by about 10 cm towards the center, we make small holes.

6. We take a tape about four meters long. I use the one used to tie flowers. It does not tear or stretch across, so it has proven itself to be reliable. And we stitch the piñata with ribbon, leaving long ends. At the end of the stitching, the edges of the tape need to be brought inward and tied together with a knot in the center.

7. A roll of corrugated paper of the desired color must be cut crosswise into small pieces, like a loaf or sausage. And cut each resulting mini-roll into a fringe on one side, without cutting three cm to the edge.

8. We will glue the piñata from the end (bottom) with the fringe down. PVA glue should be taken in a jar for children's creativity, with a thin long spout. Apply glue and gradually, unwinding the roll, glue it in a circle and close to the volume of the piñata. Add glue to the edge where the hole is. Let it dry for about a day.

9. Glue additional elements onto the piñata. We make eyes, ears, tails and horns from cardboard or colored paper. Filling with confetti. You can cut different colored paper, scraps of corrugated paper are also great. Toy paper money, stickers, small soft balls, small toys, etc. And of course, sweets. Candy about two kg. They must be in packages, and chewing marmalade must be in mini packages.

10. We cut out a circle of cardboard according to the size of the hole, make a hole in the center through which we will pass the rope. Remember, we sewed the piñata and the ends of the rope, and then tied them together and left them inside. Now, let the ends of the rope out of the piñata through the hole in the cardboard circle. Secure with tape. It turned out that the lid was closed, and we could hang the piñata itself by the rope.

11. We tie the pinata to a long stick. You can take a plastic mop stick with a ring at the end. It looked like a fishing rod with a large piñata hanging at the end.

12. We are preparing a whipping stick. You can take a stick, a bat, a thin plastic tube, a rolling pin, etc. It can be decorated with ribbons or hung with fringe. If you want to make a piñata in the shape of a car or an animal, then you need to assemble a base from cardboard patterns and paper tape, and also cover it with newspapers. But such models are less strong than a ball.

Game process

Most often, the piñata is hit with a stick, blindfolded, and in turns. But this version of the game requires a large space so that others can run away when the blindfolded player hits in different directions, trying to hit the piñata.

We arrange children according to height. The birthday person always comes first. The birthday boy or the smallest child. Why? Because small children will not hit the piñata too hard, and then there is a chance that everyone who is participating in the game will be able to hit the piñata. If you put the biggest children in the front row, the piñata will be broken faster, and the kids simply won’t have time to hit it. Tears and disappointment are guaranteed.

The dad or host holds the piñata on a stick and announces the rules. Everyone lines up according to their height to take turns hitting. Also, so that kids don’t run forward when others are hitting the piñata. Everyone can hit twice.

Remember the main rule. When one person hits the piñata, the other children and participants must be held at a safe distance by dad or an adult participant. Children must take turns and not run ahead. And the most important rule. When the piñata is broken and the candies and prizes fly out, the entire crowd will become uncontrollable. Children will rush to collect gifts. Move the stick with the piñata to the side or raise it higher so that the person who hits the piñata does not start waving the stick over the heads of those collecting.

This is a great danger when an unruly crowd of children greedily grab candy and put it in their pockets. Anyone driving or beating a piñata will definitely want to finish off the piñata: break it into pieces, tear it off the stick. He will start belligerently waving a stick over the children's heads. So explain the rules of the game right away.

Two-year-old Mark knows very well what a piñata is. When he was little and saw his mother’s next order, he ran with the first stick he came across and hit the piñata. And although a piñata usually requires a large space, we manage to play it in the room. Only adults stand up, protecting the TV, sideboard and other fragile objects.

Of course, to make your own piñata with your own hands, you need to work hard and you need to start doing this in advance. There are several options for making a piñata with your own hands. You can glue it from cardboard with tape and PVA glue, or make it from a ball covered with papier-mâché. We will consider both options.

But let's first decide what we will fill our piñata with.

Piñata filling

There is no need to fill the piñata completely; there should be empty space inside so that it can break. And the piñata should remain mobile enough so that children are interested in hitting it, and it dodges and swings. It is recommended to fill the piñata no more than 1/2-1/3 of the piñata.

Small toys can also serve as original filling for a piñata, the main thing is that they are new, or relatively new; even light and unbreakable Kinder Surprise toys will do. Ready-made sets of lightweight plastic toys and animals are also available for sale. Imagine the delight of the children when, after breaking the piñata, not only candies, but also small toys mixed with confetti and paper cut-outs fall on them!

How big can a piñata be?

To make it easy to break the piñata, it must be quite large. But at the same time, not too bulky, because it will still need to be filled with filling and hung, and the larger it is, the heavier it will be. On average - from 50 cm to 1 meter.

The work plan for cardboard piñatas is almost the same.

It is necessary to cut out the piñata diagram from cardboard and glue all sections of the cardboard together with adhesive tape or a glue gun. Now is the time to place sweets and small toys inside. For reliable fastening, you can additionally glue plain paper identical to the size of the cardboard on top, as if wrapping a piñata, but the edges should remain just as sharp.

An important point is that the rope by which the toy will be suspended must be attached now, otherwise you will have to drill a new hole and suffer from pulling the cord through it.

We cut long strips of corrugated paper of equal width. We fold each strip several times and cut it into a “fence”.

Glue the strips of paper to the base using PVA or hot glue. You need to move from bottom to top so that the coating is uniform.

Pinata using papier-mâché technique

To make a papier-mâché piñata we will need:

1. Thin crepe paper or corrugated paper for flowers. Crepe paper comes from a stationery store. Corrugated paper for flowers is thicker, sticks worse and stains your fingers. Crepe paper must be cut into strips.

The work plan for papier-mâché piñatas is almost the same.

Inflate the balloon, tie it and secure all protruding parts of the balloon with tape, making it perfectly smooth.

Take about 3 cups of flour and 3 cups of water, the amount of flour is always equal to the amount of water used. If you have a smaller ball, you will need less flour and water. Mix thoroughly. You should end up with a fairly thick paste.

We glue the first layer using plain water - dip strips of paper in water and place them on the ball. If you make this layer with paste, it will stick to the ball. Leave the layer to dry completely. Don't be alarmed if the dry paper is uneven.

We will glue all other layers of the piñata using paste: mix 1/4 cup wheat flour with 1 water. Meanwhile, pour 5 glasses of water into a saucepan and put it on the fire to boil. When the flour is well mixed with water, pour this flour mixture into a saucepan with water and cook over low heat, stirring, for 3 minutes. The finished paste should be cooled completely.

Soak newspaper strips in papier-mâché paste and remove excess solution before attaching them to the balloon.

Hang the ball and continue covering it with newspaper strips. Let the first layer dry and then add the second and third layers. Leave the ball to dry completely overnight.

While our ball is drying, start making decor for the piñata.

Make a small hole in the dried ball and release the air. Using scissors, carefully cut out a circle slightly smaller than the diameter of the cone. Remove and discard the deflated rubber ball.

Take a knife and punch a small hole in the opposite edge. Tie the end of a thick rope into a double knot and pass it through the small hole. Fill the piñata with candy. Close the hole and secure the entrance with tape.

Take strips of crepe paper and make a wide fringe on it. The easiest way to do this is when the paper is folded in several layers. Place a very thin line of glue along the top of the edge of the crepe paper. Wrap the fringe around the base of the piñata, with the fringe facing down. Cover each layer of paper with the next layer.

Depending on the birthday party theme, you can make a pint to match. If you have a pirate birthday, make the head of a Jolly Roger or an evil pirate, if it’s a knight’s birthday, make a dragon!

It is important to follow safety rules. You cannot stand near a piñata while it is being hit. The easiest way to break a piñata is with a small stick or bat.

You can wear a blindfold, but if the children are small, then without a blindfold.

The rules for beating look like this: the first lucky one is selected from the crowd of guests according to a counting, then everyone lines up in a line according to the same counting, he is blindfolded and given a bat in his hands. Place it in front of the piñata and spin it. And they scatter to the sides, because with the next movement he must hit the piñata, hit it and break it. If it doesn’t work out the first time, it is promoted a second time. And so - as many attempts as you want to give to one participant. Usually this is three attempts. If all attempts fail, then the blindfold and bat go to the next lucky person, and everything is repeated again.
