Factors to consider when choosing a node:

• Tie thickness (fabric thickness, lining thickness)
• Type of construction (whether it is a regular tie or in 6, 7, 11 additions)
• Type of material (for example, smooth silk and knitted silk or silk-grenadine are far from the same thing)
• Shirt collar type and width
• Jacket Lapel Width
• The degree of formality of the situation
• Tie Length (Some ties will look too long if you tie them in a simple knot, others will look too short if you choose large knots)

General rules

• The thicker the tie, the simpler the knot should be. Thin ties can be tied with a Half Windsor and sometimes even a Windsor, but for thick ones it is better to choose a Four or an East knot.
• For formal and formal occasions, symmetrical knots, not too small, but not too large, are the best choice. Half-Windsor is likely to be a good option.
• Knitted ties are always tied in simple knots (Four, Kent, Eastern).
• Very large knots (Windsor, Granchester, etc.) rarely look good. They are not suitable, by the way, for people with a short and massive neck; in addition, they look bad on the owners of narrow elongated faces and a thin long neck.

The most versatile knot

I think this is the Four, he is also a classic knot, he is also Four-in-Hand. Sometimes it is called a simple knot, but sometimes the east knot is also called that. The diagram below shows how the four should be tied. After proper training, this knot is easily tied even blindly.

Unfortunately, short people often have a problem: a tie tied with a four turns out to be too long. There are several ways out - either use more voluminous variants of the Four (we will discuss them below), or completely different nodes (say, Nikki, Pratt-Shelby, Half Windsor).

The four is good because it looks good in the office, and at a picnic, and in the theater, and in almost all other places. On the other hand, it is not as formal as symmetrical knots - for example, Half-Windsor and Windsor.

Four is an excellent choice for many knitted/knitted ties, thick wool, linen and cashmere ties, as well as silk ties in 6, 7, 11 folds. However, this knot looks good on any tie. Simple and effective is about him by Michael Hill, who prefers the Four to all other knots.

Most Overrated Knot

Of course, this is Windsor. It rarely looks pretty, more often it just looks ugly (especially if it is tied with a thick tie, and even clumsily). Windsor is combined exclusively with wide collars (preferably cutaway), with a large angle between the ends, and it should be tied only on ties made of smooth, thin silk. Far from all men, Windsor looks good: for example, both a thin long neck and a thick short neck will definitely look better with a Four.

There is a legend that the Windsor knot was named after the Duke of Windsor, a famous English dandy. Yes, it is partly true, but only partly. It is assumed that the duke did not use such a knot, but ordered ties with thick lining - so that the knot was more massive. The Windsor knot itself was invented by imitators who did not realize that the Duke was using thickly lined ties, but thought he was using some special knot. A number of photographs show that the Duke's tie is clearly knotted. Not windsor knot.

The simplest knots

This is Kent (Kent) and its variation - Eastern (Oriental knot). Such knots are good for tying ties made of textured thick materials, as well as knitted and knitted models. On smooth silk ties, these knots do not look very pretty, and besides, they quickly begin to weaken, and they must be constantly tightened. Another thing is dense, slightly fleecy materials with a pronounced texture, which helps to keep the knot in the position that you gave it in the morning.

Little known but worthy knots

First of all, this is Half-Windsor; Michael Drake wrote that this is one of only two knots worth considering. Perhaps the statement itself is somewhat categorical, but there is no doubt: the half-Windsor knot is very versatile. It is not as large and massive as the Windsor, but also symmetrical. It goes especially well with costumes. It is better to tie silk ties with such a knot, as well as ties made from a mixture of silk and linen, silk and wool. For thick ties, as well as ties with 6, 7, 11 additions, this knot does not fit well.

Go ahead. Two more good knots are Victoria and Prince Albert. In fact, this is a Four with some additional layer. Such knots can be a lifesaver for those who see that a tie tied with a simple Four turns out to be too long. Perhaps Victoria and Prince Albert are not as versatile as the four; they look bad on very thick and knitted ties, as well as in combination with collars less than 7.5 cm wide (7.5 cm only if the angle between the ends is from 130 degrees and the tie is modest in thickness). A collar with an angle of 90 degrees or less will also be a poor choice.

Finally, there are a couple of interesting knots - these are Nicky (Nicky) and Pratt-Shelby (Pratt-Shelby). Nikki, by the way, is one of my favorite knots; and if I am talking about my preferences, I will say that I tie my ties with the following knots: Four, Nikki, Half Windsor, Pratt-Shelby, Victoria and Prince Albert.

Nikki and Pratt-Shelby are suitable for most ties and for many collars, but look better with spread/semi-spread collars 8-9 cm wide. from a mixture of silk with wool or linen (the main thing is not too thick).

Decorations

Each tie knot can be tied with small embellishments: hollows, dimples, hollows. These are pretty easy to make, all you need is a little practice in front of a mirror. One of the easiest ways is to use your finger(s) to press the center of the tie under the knot before tightening it completely. Another way is to slightly fold the edges of the tie up before passing it through the loop - and hold it while tightening the knot.

Remember that all these dimples and dimples are optional, and ties without them can look pretty good. Let's say Gianni Agnelli tied his ties in both ways.
