Folk holidays November 6, 2017

  • Russian light. The national holiday "Russian Svetets" is celebrated on November 6 (according to the old style - October 24). On this day, believers of the Orthodox Church venerate the icon of the Theotokos "Joy of All Who Sorrow." Other names of the holiday: "Grieving Mother of God", "Svetets", "Athanasius". The holiday got its name Svetets because of the girlish gatherings that took place on that day under the illumination of torches. In the 17th century, the icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow" was kept in the Church of the Transfiguration. At that time, the sister of Patriarch Joachim Evfimiya lived in Moscow. She suffered from an illness that no one could cure - a wound in her side. In 1688, after praying to the Most Holy Theotokos, she heard a voice that announced a possible healing at the image of "Joy of All Who Sorrow." After a prayer service over the icon, the woman was cured. Since that time, according to legend, the image has shown many more miraculous healings. Traditionally, on this day, young unmarried girls gathered for gatherings and did needlework. All this happened by the light of a torch, which is why the day itself was often called Svetets. “The Russian light is the joy of girls,” they said among the people. It was believed that in the light of a torch, forged patterns, herbs and birds, as it were, told the girl about the soul of her betrothed, about love. The gathering place was a hut or the house of a widow or an elderly woman who was paid money for renting a room. The payment was food (mainly vegetables) or an offer for summer work in the garden or field. The meetings consisted of two parts. The first part was “lesson” work - each of the girls was given a “lesson” by her mother, that is, a task: exactly how much work needs to be done. When the work was done, the second part began: fun, songs, accompanied by dances and games. At the agreed time, young guys came to the hut, who chose brides, and then sent matchmakers to their homes. According to legend, if a mirror accidentally breaks on November 6, it will be a big disaster. The people believed that in order to prevent the trouble prophesied by a broken mirror, it was necessary to sweep all the fragments into one place, place seven church candles around them on the floor, light them, turn around three times counterclockwise and blow them out at once. Throw away the broom, fragments and candles in a deserted place or bury. Wash the floor by adding a little holy water to the water and take a shower yourself.
