The moment has come when the number of people with tattoos living in a big city is approximately equal to those who do not have tattoos on their bodies. A tattoo is no longer a prison or informal mark, but ordinary decoration like earrings or watches (by the way, a tattoo made by a truly professional artist is comparable to expensive jewelry in price, and you will have to wait in line for several months). For some, drawings on the body are still a sacred act, for some they have become a collector's item, and for some - a way to hide a scar or figure flaws. We have collected 10 popular destinations that will help you shock your mom with quality and taste.

American traditional (old school)

The style gained popularity thanks to a tattoo artist named Sailor Jerry (Jerry Sailor), who worked in the Hawaiian Islands in the 1930s and made simple bright tattoos with a bold outline and a simple plot: skulls, roses, pin-up girls. Wearing such pictures was popular among sailors and other wandering adventurers. The thick, bright lines don't fade over time, and the simple colors (predominantly blue and red) don't fade as much in the sun. A person with such a tattoo could afford to be carried into the ocean and even slightly eaten by sharks, but he still had hope for identification and prayer for the repose of his rebellious soul: characteristic tattoos were recorded in the sailor's passport. It is in this style that the famous Ed Hardy draws, a T-shirt with the design of which is probably in your closet.

Artist

His real name was Norman Collins, and he actually served in the Navy. Born in 1911, Norman ran away from home as a child, traveled around America in freight trains, and, having reached Chicago, was apprenticed to a tattoo artist. Having mastered a new craft, the connoisseurs of which were mainly sailors, Norman went to serve in the Navy and visited half the countries of the world until he found his promised land in Hawaii. There he lived into old age, perfecting his art and creating designs that would become iconic in the 21st century.

The art of underwear painting became widespread in Japan in the 17th century. It was then that a translation of the classic Chinese novel "River Backwaters" was published with bright lithographs, the heroes of which were covered with artistic tattoos - the fashion for them spread among the nobility. However, a century later, while establishing contacts with Europe, the Japanese emperor became concerned about the image of the country: the Europeans considered the tattooed Japanese to be savages. Body paintings were banned and became a special feature of the Japanese mafia - the yakuza. In 1948, during the occupation, the ban was lifted, but in modern Japan, a person decorated with pictures can still not be allowed into a pool or fitness club.

The traditional style of irezumi has evolved over decades, keeping in mind that the tattoo not only looks good when it is just made, but also lives for many years. The pictures are not located separately, but completely cover the surface of the body with intricacies of flowers, dragons, sacred carps, tigers and demons. Just like old school, irezumi are executed in thick lines using only primary colors. Japanese tattooists used sharply honed bamboo sticks that were dipped in ink.

Today there is the so-called neo-Japanese style, when traditional motifs are depicted more realistically, a wider palette and finer details are used.

Artist

His parents were artistic vagabonds, in the 1970s the family wandered around the world, making a living with tattoos. Philip's father made his first tattoo when the boy was ten years old. At thirteen, the young artist was already painting his first client (they say he screwed up badly by inserting the needle too deep), and at eighteen he became a superstar in the tattoo community. In almost any thematic magazine of the 1990s, you could find a photo of Philip's work or a copy of his design. It was he who developed the vibrant and surreal neo-Japanese style.

Realism

Thanks to the advent of modern tattoo machines, industrially made needles and a huge color palette of ink, real painting on the skin became possible. Appeared a new style- realism: portraits, images of animals or plants, made with photographic accuracy. As a rule, such tattoos are made without a clear outline, using smooth color transitions. They are applied with a "magnum" - a needle, which is a wide "spatula" consisting of individual needles.

Newschool

Tattoos reminiscent of book illustrations with a touch of the grotesque. Bright colors, clear contours, unexpected color transitions are used. These pictures are similar to modern hand-drawn animation or the work of art nouveau artists.

Separately, in this genre, one can single out "watercolor" tattoos - pictures made as if with strokes of bright color without a clear outline. True, since this style is quite new, it is not yet clear how these tattoos will look over time. Color spots without a clear outline, especially yellow, white, pink and green, disappear rather quickly from the skin.

Biomechanics

A style that gained popularity after the release of the film "Alien", when the surrealistic fantasies of the Swiss artist Giger began to appear not only in the nightmares of bohemian drug addicts, but also in the average dreams of an ordinary man in the street. It was at this moment that bright realistic tattoos, in which mechanical and plant elements seem to wrap around the human body, began to gain popularity and took shape as a new direction. "Biomechanical" designs resemble three-dimensional tribal ornaments suspended in the void. They may contain fantastic alien creatures, crystals, rays of light.

Artist

Guy Atchison, who in the 1980s began to make tattoos reminiscent of Gigerian scenery, can perhaps be considered the founder of the biomechanical style. Atchison wrote a book that is considered one of the canonical tattoo textbooks (by the way, many masters were very angry with him for this, since tattooing until that moment was considered a “guild” craft, knowledge was transferred exclusively inside the workshops and was inaccessible to a person from the street). It was Guy who first formulated the rule for flowing around the body with patterns: the pattern should lie along the main curves of the muscles, not cutting off, but emphasizing the lines of the body (by the way, in Japanese and tribal tattoos this happens by itself - these are the design features). In order to achieve the most realistic arrangement of light spots, the artist built three-dimensional installations based on preliminary sketches of tattoos and illuminated them from different angles.

tribal

Traditional tattoos from different peoples of the world are called "tribal". In fact, patterns on the body were made in almost all ancient communities, from Siberia to the island peoples of Polynesia (as an initiation into adulthood or evidence of victory over a particularly insidious enemy). As a rule, such tattoos are geometric patterns and symbolic figures, which, like Japanese irezumi, cover large areas on the surface of the body. Usually tribal tattoos are done in one color.

horror

Mixing realism and biomechanics to depict characters from horror films, zombies and other evil spirits is a horror style popularized by tattoo artist Paul Booth. It is thanks to this direction that paints with the tempting name "green pus" and "bloody Mary" appeared on the market of tattoo accessories. Freehand is considered traditional for this direction - drawing directly on the body without first making a stencil. Horror also implies large spaces - in this style, the "sleeve" or back is immediately clogged.

Artist

One of the most famous tattoo artists of our time. He has tattooed Slipknot, Mudvayne, Slayer, Pantera, Soulfly and Sepultura. Paul started out as a graffiti artist. At the age of nineteen, he decided to get his first tattoo and, looking at the process, he became eager to translate his “black” fantasies into a tattoo. In 1998, he opened Last Rites, a dark art space in New York City, an art gallery and tattoo studio designed in the Gothic style.

Trash polka

None of the current tattoo styles came about by chance. Art developed as technologies developed: the production of machines, pigments, and various aids. And for a true master, nothing is impossible! With the help of a typewriter, he can create almost without restrictions - imitate brush painting, create gradients, watercolor effects, all kinds of shadows. A tattoo can be bright and unusual as much as the creator and its future owner wish. Neither the scale nor the color palette is limited. With the proper level of skill, it is possible to create stunning miniatures of paintings, realistic portraits, abstractions, and fantastic landscapes.

Of course, this was not always the case. The first tattoos did not differ in detail and beauty, but they were full of meaning. Absolutely specific: they meant everything that was important for the owners. And this is love, loyalty, happiness, luck. The set of subjects was minimal: roses, swallows and hearts for girls, tigers, skulls and daggers for men. But such a dynamic art could not remain unchanged for long. New school appeared behind the old school - a new tattoo school, where there were more colors, details, plots and improvisation. And then the development went very quickly! Sketching has become a high-level art, uniqueness has gained immense value. Artists figured out how to combine drawing and body anatomy. And most importantly, such unique styles as biomechanics, realism, oriental and tribal, graphics appeared. Some of them existed before, but in a completely different capacity. Were isolated and little known. Now they have been resurrected.
