This date was not chosen by chance - according to the old Russian style, this day fell on November 20, it was then that in 1864 a number of legislative charters and acts were adopted, which formed the basis for the upcoming judicial reform. Russian lawyers celebrated November 20 as a professional holiday until the revolution itself, and when later, in our days, a decision was made - what date to celebrate Lawyer's Day - it was decided to turn to the history of the country.

From the history of jurisprudence
As an independent science, jurisprudence arose in Russia in the eighteenth century. The first Russian jurists were then engaged not so much in lawmaking as in ordering existing rules and charters, bringing them to a single system. Peter the Great then fully trusted the German system of lawmaking, and therefore the German teachers discharged from abroad became the first teachers of law in Russia. Later, Russian teachers began to teach legal science.

The initiator of the celebration of this day in Russia was the Regional Duma of Moscow. On January 29, 2008, at the congress of the Russian Legal Association, the initiative to create professional holiday supported by D. Medvedev, who was then Deputy Prime Minister.
February 4, 2008 by decree of the President of Russia V. Putin Lawyer's Day in Russia was set as official holiday.
Lawyer's Day 2018 year is the ninth official celebration of this professional day.

December 3rd is Lawyer's Day in Russia. The decree establishing the holiday was signed on February 4, 2008 by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In Russia, jurisprudence as a science arose in the 18th century. Prior to that, it was generally purely applied in nature. The lawyers of Peter the Great's time were engaged not so much in the theoretical processing of law as in its systematization, ordering disparate, contradictory acts. The main content of the new system of training for the legal profession was the study of legal sciences in educational institutions specially created for this purpose. The first legal scholars appeared in Russia at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, opened in 1725 at the behest of Peter I. Legal science and education received a new impetus in their development with the opening of Moscow University in 1755, where the Faculty of Law was formed.
The teaching of legal sciences in Russia was started by German lawyers invited by Peter I, but already in the middle of the 18th century law was taught by Russian professional lawyers.
On September 8, 1802, the Ministry of Justice was established in Russia.
On the new level Russian jurisprudence was brought out by two events: the publication of the Complete Collection of Laws and the Code of Laws of the Russian Empire and the judicial reform of 1864. This period gave Russia a whole generation of lawyers who laid the foundation for the further development of science. They took German jurisprudence as the basis for Russian jurisprudence, primarily the direction that was leading at that time - the historical school of law.
In the early years of the existence of the USSR, a lawyer was considered the bearer of the most important knowledge and was subject to mobilization for state building (along with military specialists). On May 11, 1920, the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR issued a resolution "On the registration of persons with a higher legal education", according to which these persons were required to register within three days in the departments of accounting and distribution of labor. Delay in registration was equated with desertion and punished by the court.
In post-perestroika Russia, the role and importance of the legal profession has changed radically, its authority and popularity have increased, new legal specialties have emerged (justices of the peace, bailiffs, private notaries, etc.); the structure, methods and forms of higher legal education have changed; new corporate and public associations lawyers (notary chambers, professional associations various categories lawyers, associations of law schools, etc.).
Currently, there are several federal and dozens of regional public and non-profit corporate organizations of lawyers and their associations in Russia.
The current stage of reforms in Russia is characterized by the improvement and strengthening of the rule of law, the creation and development of democratic institutions of society.
The initiative to establish a new professional holiday in Russia - Lawyer's Day - was first put forward by the Moscow Regional Duma, whose deputies addressed this proposal to the Association of Lawyers of Russia. Before that, only the Day of the Prosecutor's Office and the Day of the Legal Service Specialist were celebrated in Russia. However, these categories of lawyers do not include employees of the legal profession in the field of law-making and law enforcement, and specialists working in other areas of creating and applying the rules of law. On January 29, 2008, at the congress of the Association of Lawyers of Russia, the idea of establishing a new professional holiday was supported by Dmitry Medvedev, First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia.
At the stage of putting forward the initiative, there were several options for setting the date itself. According to one of them, it was proposed to celebrate Lawyer's Day on February 28 - the day of memory of the Grand Duke of Kyiv Yaroslav the Wise, who laid the foundation for the oldest code of laws, Russkaya Pravda. Other proposals included January 22, the day on which, in 1724, the Senate considered a draft regulation on the establishment of the Academy of Sciences and Arts, in which the Faculty of Law was established.

It was planned to determine the following dates for the Lawyer's Day: February 28 - as a memory of Yaroslav the Wise, who laid the foundation for the Russkaya Pravda Code of Laws, and January 22 - the day of consideration of the draft Regulations on the Academy of Sciences and Arts (the Faculty of Law also began its activities in its composition). The emergence of jurisprudence as a science

So it was until 1917, before the October Revolution. The Soviet government abolished Lawyer's Days. However, after 2008 they returned - the international day of the lawyer began to be celebrated on December 3 (November 20, according to the old style), as it had been since 1864.
In the period of the USSR (the first years), a lawyer was a carrier of important knowledge. The main task of the worker was state building. On May 11, 1920, the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR issued a decree obliging all lawyers to register with the employment departments (accounting and distribution of labor force) within three days after their studies in order to distribute labor reserves as efficiently as possible. If citizens did not have time to do this at the specified time, then the act was equated with desertion and was considered in court, a sentence was passed.
After perestroika in Russia, the role of lawyers changed. The profession has become popular and in demand: new positions have appeared, for example, justices of the peace, notaries, bailiffs.
