Can vertical blinds be machine washed? How to wash vertical blinds at home? Mechanical washing should take place in this order

All owners of modern curtains on the windows are concerned about the question - how to wash the blinds. They are made of plastic, metal or fabric coated with an antistatic compound, but sooner or later they still become stained, dusty and lose their original appearance.

Can blinds be machine washed?

It is allowed to use machine wash only for vertical fabric slats, it must be done correctly. How to wash blinds washing machine:

  1. Remove all plates from the frame, unfasten small parts from them.
  2. Twist each lamella into a roll and put it in a fabric bag for washing, only after that load it into the drum.
  3. Pour in washing powder.
  4. Set the delicate mode of washing without spinning at a temperature of not more than 30 ° C.
  5. At the end of the process, the blinds must be rinsed under the pressure of the shower and allowed to drain excess water.
  6. It is necessary to dry the lamellas in expanded form.
  7. It is better to hang them on the frame a little damp, and immediately attach the weights so that the matter takes on its former shape.

How to wash blinds at home?

Not every owner knows whether blinds can be washed and how to do it correctly. The slats are made from different materials and have an excellent design - horizontal, vertical, roll. The cleaning procedure that can be carried out at home also depends on the type of product. It is impossible to wash only wooden ones and - they are cleaned with a dry cloth or a vacuum cleaner.

How to wash horizontal blinds?

Before washing at home or models made of aluminum, plastic, made in a horizontal version, they must be closed and removed from the window. When opened, wet lamellas will stick together and it will be inconvenient to clean them. How to wash horizontal blinds:

  1. Wash the items in the bath with a strong jet of water to wash off surface dirt and dust.
  2. Make a warm solution with liquid detergent.
  3. Leave the blinds in soapy water for a couple of hours, additionally rub the strips with a soft sponge.
  4. Rinse the slats with a flowing jet, leave in the bath for 30 minutes to drain excess liquid from them.
  5. After that, hang the product back on the window, wipe them with a dry cloth and leave to dry.

How to wash vertical blinds?

Beautiful vertical slats can also be washed by hand. They are often made of dense fabric, and this procedure will help to avoid its deformation. Brushes are not used during cleaning, otherwise the canvas will soon become unusable. How to wash vertical blinds at home:

  1. Remove the strips from the eaves, disconnect all chains, weights.
  2. Twist fabric lamellas into rolls without fabric kinks, wrap in special bags.
  3. Soak strips in soapy water for 30 minutes.
  4. After the matter has soaked, it is washed with running water until the soap suds disappear completely.
  5. If after the procedure there are still dirty spots, it must be repeated.
  6. In order for the strips to dry evenly, they must be hung up immediately after washing. Then they straighten and do not deform.

How to wash roller blinds?

Before washing roller blinds, you need to decide on the type of cleaning. Not heavily soiled fabric in the open form is treated with a vacuum cleaner with a delicate nozzle. Intermittent stains can be erased with a regular eraser or a natural-based stain remover. If necessary, wet cleaning can be applied. How to wash fabric roller blinds:

  1. Remove the curtain, place it in a soapy solution.
  2. Rub the surface of the fabric with a soft sponge.
  3. Rinse the canvas with clean water several times under the shower.
  4. You need to rinse the product well so that spots do not form on it from sunlight.
  5. It is necessary to dry the rolled fabric in a straightened form on a flat surface so that the fabric does not stretch.
  6. If necessary, the fabric is straightened with an iron through a damp cloth.

How to wash blinds day and night?

Fabric roleta "" - horizontal and consist of wide strips, one of which is dark, the second is light. Therefore, when asked whether blinds can be washed in a typewriter, the answer is no. Firstly, such a roll will not fit in the drum, and secondly, transparent lamellas can shed from a long stay in water. For cleaning, you can walk on the fabric with a vacuum cleaner or a dry cloth, a wet brush. If more thorough care is required, it is advisable to carry out wet processing of the product:

  1. Remove the sheets from the opening.
  2. Soak the blinds in a bath of warm, mild, non-chlorine detergent for half an hour.
  3. To wash the blinds, a damp sponge is useful, the product is washed with neat horizontal movements.
  4. After that, the lamellas are washed with clean water, hung up so that the water is glass, and again they cling to the window.

Blinds for many are a more practical and simple alternative to textile window decor - heavy curtains, massive curtains, airy curtains. They do not require special care difficulties, but sometimes questions arise: is it possible to wash the blinds, and how to do it correctly.

By adjusting the position of horizontal slats or vertical strips of blinds, it is easy to achieve the optimal amount of light in the room.

Of course, the very concept of “washing” is applicable only to fabric products, therefore, all types of aluminum, bamboo, plastic blinds are only wiped with a damp cloth or vacuumed without removing. Only vertical blinds made of synthetic fabrics can be washed.

Washing is also used for certain types of roller blinds or Roman blinds, if the fabric can be removed from them, freeing it from metal and plastic parts.

The blinds hanging on the window get dirty not only because of the street (open windows and leaky joints), but also because of our life activity (house dust, animals, accidental pollution in the form of splashes from drinks, children's pranks, etc.). Vacuuming or wiping with a damp cloth does not prevent the appearance of gray deposits and dirt clogging the seams, fasteners and adjustments. It is believed that every time you wash windows, that is, 1-2 times a year, you need to wash the blinds.

Long slats (separate planks) suspended from the ceiling cornice are very problematic to wipe or wash without removing, therefore, in order to wash vertical blinds, they must be dismantled and disconnected from each strip fasteners.

First you need to pull out the lower chain with weights connecting the slats, and carefully remove them.

Plastic parts are easily cracked and broken under mechanical stress, so they must be removed carefully. Disconnected plastic elements are best placed immediately in warm water or soapy water to wash off dirt. Then they proceed to the dismantling of the main elements of the blinds - vertically hanging lamella strips.

The slats are removed in the same way as they are hung up. On many models, you first need to remove the top trim bar to access the fasteners.

If the removed lamellas are very dirty, then they are advised to pre-vacuum, steam clean or soak in warm soapy water for 20-30 minutes. You can then wash the blinds in the washing machine or by hand.

Machine wash

In the machine, it is permissible to wash the blinds at home from any synthetic fabrics. This method is the most simple and effective.

Before washing, the slats should be sorted by color.

Before washing vertical blinds in the washing machine, they are sorted by color (light and dark are best loaded into the machine separately) and inspected. If the slats are heavily soiled or stained, they must first be washed and removed with suitable means.

To make it more convenient to load into the drum, long strips are stacked on top of each other (5-10 pieces each, depending on the length and width of the lamellas, fabric density, machine volume) and rolled into a roll.

For the safety of the washing process, each roll is advised to be put in a special bag (mesh cover with a zipper) or packed in an old pillowcase.

The mode should be set to delicate or hand wash

With gentle washing modes, the water temperature is chosen cool (should not exceed 40 ℃), and it is better to turn off the spin cycle altogether or set it to the minimum power (no more than 400 rpm). Detergents are preferable to take soft and liquid, concentrated pre-diluted with water.

The use of chlorine-containing and other aggressive bleaching agents or stain removers is strictly prohibited.

Take extra care if you are going to wash blinds in bright colors or patterns. Unstable paints can shed and “float” from contact with water, so try rubbing one of the strips in a small area with a white wet rag first. If the fabric is dyed, then the idea of \u200b\u200bwashing will have to be abandoned. High-quality products that have a lasting color will endure "water procedures" without loss.

Blinds colored or patterned should be rubbed with a damp cloth in an inconspicuous area to determine the durability of the colors.

The washed slats can be dried both in a vertical (hung) form, and by spreading them horizontally. In the process of drying, the strips sometimes begin to bend or wrap. This problem is solved with the help of an iron, which, at minimum temperatures, irons the dried lamellas without stretching the fabric through a damp, non-fading cotton rag or gauze.

After machine washing, the hard material of the slats becomes softer, which eventually leads to a loss of shape and sun protection properties, so it is not recommended to wash the blinds in the washing machine too often.

Handwash

Washing fabric blinds by hand is safer, but longer and more troublesome. Some manage to wash hanging slats without removing them. This approach is justified when it comes to small individual dirt or fresh stains. In other cases, for a full wash, it is necessary to dismantle the entire structure of the blinds and disconnect the slats.

You can wash hanging slats without removing them. This approach is justified when it comes to small individual dirt or fresh stains.

To hand wash the removed slats, you will need a large basin or bath with water, in which liquid detergents (without chlorine and abrasive particles) are added: washing or shower gels, carpet or furniture cleaners. It is more convenient to scrub each strip with a sponge or a soft brush.

In order not to wash the blinds and not to dismantle each time, choose models with horizontal slats made of aluminum, plastic, bamboo. They are easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth.

All cleaning movements with a sponge must be done only in the direction of the length of the strip. Rubbing around or across can cause scuffs and scratches, distorted edges, and streaks.

For jacquard products, it is recommended exclusively handwash

The slats prepared for washing (removed from the structure) should first be washed in a shower with warm water (30-40 ℃), and then placed in a container with soapy water. Leave the fabric soaked for 20-30 minutes so that all the dirt is soaked and removed. Drain the dirty water and wipe each strip, spreading it in the bath, on both sides with a sponge in longitudinal movements. Rinse off soap suds and washed dirt with running water right in the process of wiping. For the final rinse, the washed slats are stacked on top of each other, rolled up (loosely) and immersed in a large basin or bath with clean water.

It is impossible to squeeze out and unscrew the dense fabric of the lamellas; the presence of folds during drying is also unacceptable.

In order for water to be washed and rinsed from the glass slats, they are left for some time in a roll, set on its side, in an empty basin or hung over the bathtub. You can dry the strips of blinds in a vertical or horizontal form, but it is most convenient to immediately fix them to the eaves when wet, so that they dry in place, leveling out under their own weight.

Before hanging clean slats (especially wet ones) in place, wipe window panes, cornices and window sills at least from the inside

In principle, there are no particular difficulties in washing blinds at home. The longest and most tiring process is the process of dismantling the structure and removing the lamellas, as well as their subsequent return to their place in a washed form. If you're ready to take apart and reassemble, but don't want to wash your blinds yourself, you can take them to a dry cleaner. It is most reasonable to do this with lamellas that have a complex coating or decorative elements, as well as with products that do not tolerate washing (for example, with an impregnation that protects against fading).

Vertical fabric blinds are a modern alternative to classic curtains. They are aesthetic and practical, perfectly protect from sunlight, can be used both in the office and in an apartment or house. Over time, dirt appears on them that spoil appearance. You can wash vertical blinds yourself, but you should know a number of rules. Using simple recommendations, you will not spoil the lamellas and you can still long time rejoice in their attractive appearance.

To determine if blinds can be washed, you need to determine what material they are made from:

  1. Products made of synthetic fabrics can be washed by hand and in a washing machine.
  2. For cotton lamellas, manual and machine wash.
  3. Jacquard blinds may only be dry-cleaned, wet-cleaned and hand-washed.

If you do not follow the care instructions that come with the design, the blinds can be permanently damaged. They will stretch or shrink, may lose color saturation or acquire other defects. The slats are covered with a special dirt-repellent coating, so they should be washed no more than 1-2 times a year. The fact is that with each wash, the coating is washed off and loses its properties, as a result, they will get dirty faster. It is advisable to wash them at the same time as washing the window.

Advice! If the blinds are made of expensive natural fabrics, it is better to refuse washing at home and use dry cleaning services.

How to wash: by hand or by machine?

Read the care instructions before washing. Follow all the recommendations in it. Decide on the type of wash.

Machine wash

In the machine, you can wash blinds made of cotton and synthetic fabrics. Before washing, run an idle rinse so that all powder particles from the last use of the appliance are rinsed well. Be sure to wash the powder container.

  1. Carefully remove the slats. Roll each strip into a loose roll. You can roll the lamellas into a roll for several pieces (3-5 strips).
  2. Tie the rolls with thread or cover with rubber bands.
  3. Put the prepared slats in a laundry bag.
  4. Send the bag to the car.
  5. Pour the washing gel into the powder container.
  6. Select one of the modes: "Washing delicate items", "Hand wash", "Gentle wash".
  7. Disable spin and rinse.

The choice of automatic program depends on the features of your washing machine. It is important that the water temperature is within 30–35˚C, and the number of revolutions does not exceed 400. Otherwise, the products may be severely deformed during washing.

No less careful should be taken to the choice of detergent. regular powder use is not recommended. It can damage the lamellas and leave whitish spots and stains on them. It is better to opt for a gel or liquid detergent for washing delicate or woolen items. An alternative could be a shavings baby soap. It removes dirt worse, but will not damage the lamellas.

Unwind each roll after machine washing. Gently rinse each strip in clean, warm water. Do not allow a sharp drop in water temperature, as this may cause deformation of the lamellas. You need to dry them in compliance with a number of rules.

Note! Rubbing, wrinkling, folding, wringing and twisting fabric lamellas is strictly prohibited.

Handwash

The manual washing process consists of the following steps:

  1. Remove the slats and prepare for washing. Twist into rolls and tie with an elastic band or thread.
  2. Pour warm water into a large basin (temperature about 30-35˚C).
  3. Add washing gel for delicate items.
  4. Put the prepared rolls into the soapy solution. It should completely cover the slats.
  5. Leave on for 10-20 minutes. Then unwind each roll and check the strips for dirt.
  6. If the dirt is not completely removed, gently wipe the strips on each side with a soft sponge and soapy water.
  7. Rinse the slats in clean warm water. It is most convenient to do this in the bath, using the shower head.
  8. Dry the strips.

Additional cleaning option - video:

In the process of hand washing, do not rub or wring out the slats. It is worth refusing to use brushes, washcloths with a rough surface and abrasive products.

How to wash blinds without removing from the window?

Fabric blinds should be washed no more than every six months, but if contamination appeared earlier, they can be washed without removing them from the window. To do this, you need to perform a number of simple steps:

  1. To remove excess dust, vacuum the slats with a vacuum cleaner. Use a soft brush attachment (e.g. furniture brush) and use the gentlest setting possible.
  2. Dilute warm water with a detergent suitable for cleaning vertical blinds.
  3. Moisten a soft sponge in the prepared soapy solution and wipe all the lamellas on both sides. If the water is dirty, change it to clean.
  4. Then fill the basin with clean water and again wipe all the strips with a clean sponge to remove excess detergent.
  5. Soak a soft cloth or sponge in the diluted fabric softener and wipe the slats with it.

Additional cleaning information - video:

Fabric softener will freshen the look of vertical blinds, give them a pleasant smell and protect them from dirt. The tool is also used if the lamellas are electrified. It is enough to wipe them with a sponge or cloth in a solution with conditioner to solve the problem and get rid of static electricity.

Advice! Until the blinds are completely dry, do not open the window.

How to dry properly?

If you decide not to wash, but to wash the blinds, after washing it is important to dry them properly. After rinsing, hang the slats on a rope, hanging them from the top edge with clothespins. Do not wrinkle the strips, as after drying, traces will remain at the places of the creases.

You can hang the blinds over the bathroom or on the street. If you choose the second option, choose a dark place where there is no direct sunlight. Uneven drying will cause the blinds to warp. When the water drains, hang small weights from below.

Still wet slats need to be hung on the window. This will help them accept correct form. Until the blinds are completely dry, do not open the window.

How to remove stubborn dirt?

If dust from the blinds is easy to remove with a damp cloth dipped in soapy water, then removing heavy dirt will be much more difficult. You can solve the problem with store-bought or folk remedies. If you decide to use folk methods make sure they are safe. To do this, conduct a test - apply the product in an invisible place and make sure that it does not harm the material.

To remove dirt from fabric blinds, use:

  1. Shop stain remover. Choose a product designed for delicate items. Use it according to the instructions.
  2. Ammonia. Dilute ammonia with water in a ratio of 1:1. Soak a sponge or soft cloth in the solution and wipe heavily soiled areas with it. To remove an ink stain, add some baking soda to the solution.
  3. Lemon juice. Tea marks can be removed with lemon juice. It is enough to gently wipe them with problem areas. For colored lamellas, this method should not be used, as lemon juice can be aggressive towards the dye used.

Marks from the felt-tip pen can be removed with nail polish remover, but you need to choose a composition that does not contain acetone.

Note! Do not use a stain remover containing chlorine or other harsh chemicals to remove stains.

Wash vertical blinds by hand or in the washing machine. If this does not solve the problem, contact the dry cleaner. It is also worth using the services of specialists in cases where the structures are made of expensive fabrics. Dry cleaning services will cost less than buying new blinds if they are damaged.

Follow the rules for caring for blinds, carefully select detergents for washing and wash carefully so as not to damage the slats.

If there is a steam generator at home, use it to process each strip from top to bottom in turn.

Approach 3. Special nozzle.

Some vacuum cleaners and steam generators are equipped with a special nozzle for blinds. Just pass it from top to bottom on each slat.

Conclusion

Before cleaning your blinds, carefully read the manufacturer's instructions so you don't accidentally damage the material. The video in this article will clearly show the effectiveness of all the above methods. If something is not clear - contact the comm.

Modern blinds with vertical slats delight homeowners with their practicality and ergonomics. True, everything positive sides fixtures fade into the background when the question arises of how to wash blinds and not reduce their functionality and attractiveness.

Fabric blinds: maintenance

A lot of dust constantly passes through the window area, so you will have to wash your devices quite often. It will not work to be limited only to dry cleaning and processing of lamellas directly on the ledge. At least 1-2 times a year, vertical blinds should be washed in the washing machine or cleaned by hand.

How to clean slats made of dense fabric?

Regardless of the material, vertical fabric lamellas must be detached before intensive cleaning. All small parts are removed into a separate tank and, if necessary, also cleaned by hand.

Dense matter does not respond well to washing in a washing machine, so it is better to take care of it manually:

  • Fill the tub with warm water, add some soap powder or detergent. If the blinds are colored or dyed, then these should be products with color retention properties. White fabric elements can be cleaned with bleach.
  • After the lamellas are well saturated, we proceed to the direct impact on the stains. They can be removed by hand or brushed using detergents (but not soap).
  • If the stains are very persistent, it is recommended to use a stain remover.
  • Next, drain the water, replace it with clean water and soak the slats. After that, each element must be kept under a stream of running water so that the detergent can be removed.
  • After all the cleaning operations, we hang the vertical parts on the cornice, and after that we assemble the device according to the scheme. Place a few rags or towels on which the water will drip. Drying the lamellas by throwing them over a rope is prohibited. Wrinkles form on them, which after the procedure will be difficult to eliminate.

Advice:if it is obvious that the dirt has eaten tightly and it is useless to wash individual elements, then individual lamellas can simply be replaced. You just need to match the plug-ins from the slats of the same color. If necessary, they can even be washed a little so that they perfectly match the color with the rest of the product.

The specificity of the process of washing fabric elements in a washing machine

Before washing blinds in the washing machine, you should read the manufacturer's recommendations for this issue. Most often, this approach is prohibited, and in case of damage to the object, the guarantee does not apply to it. Despite this attitude of professionals towards an aggressive approach, if you act wisely, you can get desired result with minimal energy consumption.

Advice:if the vertical blinds are made of some very delicate, lint-free fabric or simply expensive material, then it is better to take the product to the dry cleaner and not risk experimenting at home.

In practice, machine washing fabric slats is as follows:

  1. We set the delicate mode without drying and spinning, the temperature is not higher than 35 degrees. Detergents are chosen the softest, without aggressive components.
  2. Vertical stripes are assembled in 5-10 pieces (than denser fabric, the smaller the parts), are folded into a neat roll and placed in laundry bags. The latter can be replaced with old unnecessary pillowcases.
  3. We place the elements in the drum of the washing machine. It should not be hammered to capacity, it is better to divide the process into several approaches.
  4. We wash fabric curtains only once. Even if the stains remain on the surface, we no longer use the washing machine. If necessary, we perform additional manual processing of individual elements. If you wash your products in this way too often, it will soften the material and the curtains will lose their original attractive appearance.
  5. Dry vertical stripes from soft fabric on the eaves. If during processing there are noticeable folds or furrows, ironing is acceptable. True, this is done through a layer of fabric, pressing on the iron and stretching the element is strictly prohibited.

Jacquard and cotton slats: how to care for them?

It is strongly discouraged to wash such items in the washing machine, even traditional hand washing may be too aggressive for them. Despite the fact that cotton, although it does not belong to thin fabrics, after processing in a washing machine, it can sit down.

In order to wash such fancy materials, it is necessary to fold each element separately. We put them in a linen bag or laundry bag and soak them in a warm solution made from a mild detergent or liquid concentrate.

After half an hour in detergent the bags are removed, the elements are rinsed and checked. If necessary, the approach is repeated. Rubbing jacquard and cotton is strictly prohibited. With this approach, a special impregnation that repels dust is washed off very quickly, and the lamella becomes like a shapeless tape.

Do not iron these materials. After washing, such slats are immediately hung on the eaves, the weights must cling to the lower part, otherwise the fabric will sit down. Influence on the blinds with a hair dryer or other artificial heat sources is not required, they will dry quickly themselves.
